Home Depot shoppers rush to buy $100 item ringing up for only 1 cent - & there's a secret policy for

A TIKTOKER has claimed they bagged the deal of a century at Home Depot thanks to the store's secret "penny policy."

The content creator got viewers buzzing after claiming that he bought a garden item worth $100 but just one cent.

The TikToker (@toolswithsoalz316), who shares content about DIY and home repair tools, shared the deal in a recent video.

“If you’re looking for penny deals at Home Depot, well, I got one for you," he or said at the beginning of the video.

He shows the Cinch Smart Garden Raised Garden Bed that was marked down at $25.03 from its original price of $99.00.

According to the creator, the $0.03 indicates that three weeks after the item got marked down to $25.03, it gets "pennied out."

The item at his local Home Depot store was marked down on July 6, as shown in the store price tag. He posted the video four days ago.

"So these are a penny," he said. "And I'm about to buy them all."

However, his claims divided opinion online.

One viewer said they'd also managed to get a similar deal, buying a bathroom cabinet worth $133 for a penny.

But another viewer, who claimed to be a former Home Depot employee, debunked the claim.

"I worked at the Depot, we throw penny items away, we can't sell penny items," they said.

Another commenter said the policy seemed to be on a store by store basis.

"Think it depends on your store if they will sell it or not. We are told to get rid of them but idk what happens if you find one," they said.

Julie Ramhold, a consumer analyst with DealNews.com, added that the penny hack was "in defiance with store policies," and an employee could even get in trouble for selling it at that price.

"There are Reddit threads about people trying to figure out how to get these items and Home Depot store associates noting that items that reach the cost of a penny aren't technically supposed to be sold," she told Best Life.

Ramhold said that store workers must help you find these items because their price tags won't reflect the penny price, but they will warn you that they can't sell those items.

When shoppers go to pay, they may also be informed by cashiers that the item cannot be sold for a penny.

The TikTok creator suggested to a viewer in the comments to take the item to self-checkout instead, but Ramhold warns that this may not be worth it.

"The fact that this is the case should also indicate it's not worth the risk," Ramhold said.

By putting the employees in this situation, customers could also be potentially banned from shopping at certain stores, Ramhold added.
